GEMCO Constructors provides subcontractor services (like HVAC, electrical, and plumbing systems) to general contractors who build sizable spaces around the country. The Indianapolis-based company has completed projects for organizations like FedEx, Amazon, and Hilton.

Jim Reynolds, GEMCO’s Staff Accountant, tells us about his experience using GCPay as a subcontractor to submit applications for payment.
The majority of GCs that Jim’s team works with still email pay apps and lien waivers back and forth… Jim wishes more of them used pay app processing software, telling us “We don’t like paper!”

Since Jim joined GEMCO about 5 years ago, he has only required minimal instruction to get up and running using GCPay and has only interacted with the support team a few times for assistance. “That’s the good part – I don’t have any issues with using the software, so I do not need to bug anyone with problems”, Jim mentions. When he has needed help, his experience with GCPay’s support team is great. Jim says, “I would say it was very easy. Someone gave me help right way and there wasn’t any struggle to get the issue fixed.”
Using GCPay has helped GEMCO’s billing process by providing a way for them to keep track of contract amounts, making sure that change orders are accounted for in the amount due to allow for accurate invoicing the first time. “It’s about ease of use for us. With GCPay we don’t need to worry about having to make modifications after an amount due is approved at the end of a project.”
The Key Benefits for Subs
The time saved using GCPay vs. old school manual processing is a big benefit, too.
“For a large project, recording all the vendors and everything else in GCPay, it could take maybe 20 minutes, where that could take 45 minutes or more for one of the manual invoices that I have to process.”
When asked what he would tell other subcontractors about using GCPay, Jim replies, “Keeping track of the contract amount is a plus for us and that’s just an easy way for both the sub and GC to be on the same page. When you’re looking right there at the front page the contract amount that the GC is showing is right there. There’s no emailing them the invoice and asking if the contractor amount is correct. It’s right there on the site. And the waiver tracking is a huge deal for us.”
As we wrapped up we asked Jim – as a subcontractor using GCPay, what is the level of satisfaction within his organization with the benefits the software brings? His response: “I would say there is a high level of satisfaction. I can’t think of anything negative.”
